Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

HELP! I'm new! stocking community 20 gallon!

Hi Everyone!! As some people know, I'm new to this hobby and Fishlore!! I need to know how many fish I could fit in my 20g tank, (once its cycled) if I wanted to get:
1. Zebra Danios (I already have three cycling my tank)
2. Neon Tetras
3. Khuli loaches
4. catfish? (for cleaning algae)
5. Any more room? Suggestions? different fish instead?

Thank you! I want to hear from everyone!!!!

Ali

Hi,
Welcome to Fishlore.

I would add a small school of neons. I just love their colors.

You could go with 4 danios, 6 neons and a khuli.

or 4 danios 4 neons and a couple of corys.

Good Luck with your tank.

Hi!

With Khulis - I only reccomend them if you have space fir a school. Otherwise, you won't see them much. Lucy's 4 Neon, 4 Zebra 2 Cory suggestion is good - but in a 20gal tank I only recommend 2 schools. 6 Zebras, 6 Neons? You could have some shrimp in with them for bottom-dwellers - Shrimp are really cool!

You can fit up to 20" (adult size) of fish in the tank.

Would shrimp take up room in the aquarium? Or do they count? How many should I have? Should I get ghost shrimp? I'm full of questions! LOL. Keep giving advice on the fish though! I really appreachieate your comments!

Ghost shrimp are really fun to watch. I've been advised that they don't count toward your bio load.
They clean up the bottom pretty well also.

Yea, ghost shrimp, cherry shrimp, tiger shrimp.. those are all cool in a tank with no big fish that would eat them. They love decor like sunken ships.

Hi!

Ghost shrimp, any shrimp really (Well, maybe not the atyids!) don't count towards the bio-load and are great with fish who won't view them as lunch. Tetras and Danios, well let's say they prefer fish food.

YAY!! Thankyou! I heard that shrimp are very sensitive to ammonia and nitrate. So are there any specail needs that I have to give them?

I'm not one to answer that, I had 2 and they both died
I just read in another post that they are sensitive to nitrates, if that's true, I think that's probably what got mine.

If you put blood worms in the tank they will scramble to the top and swim upside down to grab one. It's really funny.

lol, i'll have to try that. I've been changing water and cleaning the tank our cherry shrimp are in daily, but it's serving as a q. tank for the plecos the shrimp came with. So far, even the tiny baby shrimp she had before she died are doing good.

Read somewhere that bio-load of Ghost Shrimp, Amano Shrimp - 1/2 to 1 gal
Cherry Shrimp - 1/4 gal

Hmm...

Hi!

Well, I'd recommend at least 7.5 pH for them to be able to construct their shell. Java moss is a 'must' for shrimp, they love that stuff so much!
