Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

29 gal stocking question

Okay, so now that I have this 29 gal up and running, I'm thinking about what fish should be in there when it's ready. Here's what I'm thinking -- please let me know if this *should* work, or if I need to make adjustments

-2 Pearl Gourami, m/f pair (looked at Gold Gourami, but am afraid they will be too big/mean)
-7 neon tetra
-7 Harlequin Rasabora
-3 Oto Cat
-1 true SAE (if I can find one)
-A few ghost shrimp (I think my PG's might occasionally nab one, but hopefully not too often)
-Malaysian Trumpet Snails

I though about just doing like 11 HR, but I already have 2 Neons and I don't want them to be all alone.

It'll be a medium planted tank w/ low-med light and hopefully no CO2, as well as driftwood (already in there) and a stack of rocks with different sized openings so the shrimp have a place to hide when molting. Hopefully getting the plants this weekend, so I should be able to start adding fish (algae eaters) in 3 weeks I think. Starting to quarantine fish now in preparation.

I'm having trouble finding female Pearl Gourami -- if these guys will work in here, any suggestions on finding a girl?

Thanks so much for your guys' help -- don't know where I'd be without you all!

Edit: Adding tank specs to my aquarium info, in case anything else is needed.

Hi!

Ditch the SAE and hey presto! Perfect. You might want to lower the numbers of Harlequins/Neons to 5 each. They should be OK like that, and it will leave some breathing space.

Why no SAE? Just want to know the reasoning. I don't know much about them other than that they eat many forms of algae.

What about 5 neons, 7 HR? I really enjoy how HR's school in larger numbers, they are so fun to watch

Thanks for the reply!

Hi!

Well, quite simply because it would be very overstocked.

Neon tetra - 1.5" - 7x1.5=10.5"
Harlequin - 1.5" - 7x1.5=10.5"
SAE - 6" - 6x1=6"
Pearl gourami - 4" - 4x2=8"
Oto - 2" - 2x=6"

10.5 + 10.5 + 6 + 8 + = 42"

If you take away the SAE - you get 36". Alright, get Harlequins and Neons. That leaves you with 33" of fish - which will do you!

Oh okay. I assumed SAE's were Oto-sized, and thought Otos only got up to 1"-1.5". Thanks for steering me straight!

Do you think I should still drop 2 neons to leave more "spare" room, or that they will be okay as you listed them (7NT, 7HR)), so long as I really stay on top of my water changes and such? I want happy fish
