Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

The general guide is 1" of adult fish for every gallon of tank, so you could fit around 38" of adult fish in the tank.
The problem is that many fish don't fit the guideline. Particularly large fish (we'll say four inches and up) need more swimming space and produce more waste, so they require more gallons per inch.
In addition, certain species don't get along well together, so be sure you do research before adding any fish. For example, you have it listed that you have two rainbow sharks. In a 38 gallon tank, each is going to feel like the other has invaded its territory, and they will likely fight each other for dominance. In the wild, one would swim away, but since there isn't enough space to run to, it is possible that one will die in this fight.

Hi!

Depends on the kind, size and tempermant. Your current stock is many times more fish than you should have (Hint hint - take them out! OK, you can keep the angels, but no others...) but that many neon tetras would be fine in there.

Hi!

Buddy, those guys aren't full grown yet. The only one who is in a tank big enough for it are the angels, butterflys (Who are fish-eaters) and rainbows. Sure you can keep them in there - but don't expect good results - if you have a heart, now's the time to show it.

Sorry if I'm springing on you, I really want every animal out there to have a good life where it can indulge in all the luxarys we humans indulge in.

Hi!

No, you can keep the fish you have, but they won't live... Yeah - for the sake of the fish, take them back to the LFS. Claim you don't want to fishkeep any more and they can have your fish back. Then, using the angels as centerpiece we can work together to make a spectacular tank for you! I'm already getting visions....

Hi!

About 150-200gal... It's best to just suffer the very short term loss of these fish - but you'll forget you ever had them when you get your tank set up as the masterpiece it has the potential to be.

1 inch per gallon is the rule. It also depends on the fish...compatibility, male to female ratio, some are schooling fish, etc. and much bigger or messy fish need more space than the rule.
Do you have any ideas of what kind of fish you want? If you have some fish in mind, there are lots of options for a tank that size.
