| overstocking ok, so i am looking on craigslist for a new, bigger tank, and i found a 55 gal that is a good deal but in the picture it was way overstocked. and i mean waaaayy overstocked. so i emailed the people and asked them about it thinking maybe they got like, this massive tank for all of their fish and that is why they are getting rid of the 55... of course not the case.
the lady emails me back that this tank comes with all of the fish shown. she says "they are fresh water tropical. not sure of the names i know there are 4 neon but there is a lot maybe 200 in all"
200?! 200 fish in a 55 gal tank?! to me that's a deal breaker cause what am i gonna do with them all? i don't have anyone to give what, at the very least 160 fish to and i just cannot kill them! what i was thinking though, is can you imagine the comments i would get if i posted that i got a new tank that was just that overstocked?! what are people thinking?! | Either you could try to give the fish to a local pet store, or ask them if you could pay the same price for the tank and only a select number. How much is it running for. |

| honestly, i don't want any of them, and the stores said they wouldn't take them so... she wants $200 but will go down. prolly thinks she is giving it away for the amount of money they have paid for the fish. |

| I'm in the same situation with a used tank I'm considering: they have 60+ cichlids in a 100 gal tank, both american and african. Nothing like what you found though...that's just awful. Good luck finding a way to deal with them all... |

| nope, they don't have another aquarium to keep the fish in... and i explained the situation to the pet store honestly and they said the doubted the fish would be healthy, and to be honest, so do i! |

| Not only is that tank way too overcrowded, but they've placed it right by a window, which probably has the water temperature all over the place.. between that and the overcrowding, I'd say those fish are high risk for sure. |

| ay chihuahua! That's absolutely amazing. that's at least 700% overstocked even if the fish are all gups, neons and platys (I can make out those for sure in there).
Wish we were still in St. Auggie - then maybe we could help take some of the fish and stock them temporarily in some empty tanks.
Do you maybe have any fish clubs nearby? Fish clubs usually have auctions and you could sell the fish off that way. Make a few bucks and get them into other tanks. Quote:

There are also several species of non-Cichlids.
Fortunately, my LFS will take trades, as long as they are healthy. If I get the tank I will spread them out into a spare tank I am not using yet, and then figure out what to do with them all from there.
EDIT: I should point out I haven't actually seen the tank in person yet, I'm just going off the list I was given. Last edited by Shaina; February 18th, 2008 at 03:15 PM.

| i just got back from seeing this tank-- it was the most disgusting thing i have ever seen! i'd say there were well over 200 fish in there including all of the fry-- i cannot believe they could even live in that water. the lid was so filthy you couldn't even tell the lights were on, and when i opened it the piece broke off because it was so dry rotted. the guy actually admitted to me that he has only cleaned it once in the five years he's owned it. and the fish--- oh my god. most of them were deformed, a ton had fin rot and what looked like ICH-- it was just sad.
i asked him to come off his price some since he didn't tell me i would need to buy a new lid, etc-- and he said he'd been considering it and decided not to because of how much money he had in the fish. i told him all of his fish were sick and deformed and he actually just laughed and said "well, that's what inbreeding does!"
needless to say, i did not make a purchase today. |

| i know it and as for no concern for life, what's crazy is that when i told him i didn't want all of the fish, he acted all despondent and told me he really didn't want to have to "get rid of them" cause he was concerned for their well being! |

| Gees! I would be patient and shop around. I know when I got my tank off Craiglist there were a ton that were like that... and I refused to take anyones fish, unless they were exactly what I planned on having already. That tank is probably gonna be hard to clean, the gravel and decorations are gonna be useless (so nasty), and you've got a bunch of sick fish to deal with. I wouldnt do it. There are great deals on there... you just got to wait for the right one. I got a spotless 65 gallon tank that was running with just a red tailed shark and a catfish. And they planned on keeping them, perfect, and the filter, which was ok cause I didnt like the model. $400 Check out the tank though! And I could actually use thier gravel to help cycle the tank cause it wasnt nasty!!! Oh and it came with heater that actually works really well (I havent seen the temp leave 78 since I got it .
