Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

stocking advice for 20g

Hi all, I will bullet the facts to keep it easy to read.
* I have set up my Aquatlantis Aquadream 90Litre (20G) tank and am present cycling carefully.
* I am keen not to overstock
* I would like 6 Schooling , colourful fish, Danios or Tetras
* a nice compatible pair of slightly larger fish like Dwarf Gouramies
* a bottom feeder
* an algae eater
* an individual eye catcher

I appreciate i must be almost at the limit now. Please advise me of some compatible combinations. I will, of course be stocking slowly to be kind to the filter, starting with the hardier Danios (zebra or whatever else is recommended) Because of the size of tank and limited stock, I want a tank that will be pleasing to the eye and not have squables between species and half eaten fins.

ALL advice will be genuinley appreciated and respected. I just want to get it right first time.

6 Neon tetras - 6"
1 Dwarf Gourami - 2.5"
3 Cories - 6"
1 Bn pleco - 5"

would give you 19.5"

many thanks Jack11, sounds good to me. Interesting that you went for neons rather than zebras but taken on board.

no problems, btw 90litres is more like 23g so you may be able to get the feature fish after all.

i went for the neos because they were smaller and would take up less room.

Can I suggest other then danio and tetra a guppy they are easy to breed, very colorful, and very interesting.

- 6 fancy guppies ( 2 male 5 female or 5 male 0 female)
- 1 dwarf gourami
- 3 Corrys (They do best in groups)
- 2 Blue Mystery Snails
- 1 rainbow shark (They look really nice)

Just my 2 cents.

I really like Jack11's suggestions!

If you would like something other than neon tetras (and they should really go into a well established tank), I suggest 5 or 6 Harlequin Rasboras.

Lemon tetras are lovely, if you can find any with good colour.

3 - 5 cherry barbs would be nice too. Very active, pretty, yet peaceful.

A 20 gallon is too small for a rainbow shark.

If you want something really showy, there are awesome bristlenoses out there!

Really? Because I know that they do not get to big maybe 5 inches at the most.
I never owned one but I always wanted one.

yes they are very agile creatures and aas they grow they can become fairly aggresive and territorial. maybe you could have a pearl gourami for the last fish. also i agree the rasboras could be a great alternative.

I think that you should take Jack11 list and take out the cories and gorami and get a trio of rainbows and a honey gorami that would be eyecatching

Well, nice response guys. I am still waiting for the tank to cycle, I put some accelerant in yesterday but still no significant nitrate reading. Therefore I can mull over all these sugestions, thanks again, what a great site.

Having mulled over all the suggestions, we have come up with our ideal stock. I apppreciate that we are right on the upper limit but we think that this would look amazing. Any comments will be appreciated.

6 x Cardinal Tetras

Pair (m&f) dwarf Gouramis

3 x Cherry Barbs

1 x BN Pleco

1 x Pearl gourami

Yes you are slightly overstocked but if you keep up regular waterchanges it should be fine. Good luck!

I would omit the pearl gourami. The male dwarf would most likely harass and fight with it.

For the cherry barbs, make sure you get 2 females and one male.

Thanks for that Barbrella, what about the sex combination with the Cardinals? What would you substitute the Pearl Gourami for as a feature fish?
Good job I'm in no rush.

  1. What about the sex combination with the Cardinals?
  2. What would you substitute the Pearl Gourami for as a feature fish?

  1. I'm not 100% sure on this but in sexually mature fish, the females are larger, rounder, and fatter. From above, the female appears wider. I don't think it would matter if you got 6 males, 6 females or a mixture of both but if I'm wrong someone will correct me.

  2. Why not envision the Dwarf pair as your feature fish? If you are after 1 single fish as your showpiece, that is going to be hard as you already have two big-ish size in the Dwarfs. Unless you want to ommit the Dwarf pair and just have the Pearl Gourami. Choices are always hard to make; that's probably why a lot of us end up with MTS
