Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Stocking Question

Hi, I have a 10 gallon tank and I was thinking about getting some platies. How many would I be able to put in a 10 gallon? Also would the ghost shrimp do ok with the platies? Thank You!

I would do a trio of platies in the 10g tank. If they have babies and you don't care to provide them with alternate lodging just leave them in there to be eatten by the parents for free protein rich food.

Ghost shrimp would fine as long as you give them plenty of hiding places such as:

Plants
Caves
Decorations
etc

Good luck, and please, post pictures when you get it all setup.

You do know about the nitrogen cycle, correct?

Do you want all males or male/female?

I'm not sure if I want male or female, I don't think I really have a preference. Do you have any suggestions? Thank You!

Welcome to FishLore Twinz

If you have a male and two females, you could quite possibly have baby platies a little bit down the line.

If you have either all male or all female you won't have that possibility.

Actually, if you have all female and they were housed with the males at the store you have up to 6 months of babies out of each one. Platies are like guppies and mollies, they store sperm and reinpregnate themselves, the males breeding with them just keeps that sperm storage full.

Lol. You're welcome. We all 'o bugger' from time to time.
