Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

overstocked???

Hello, all. My 46 gal is almost cycled, so I'm thinking on stocking ideas. I'm currently using 6 Black Skirt Tetras to do the cycling. I had a little bit of ick, from the LFS, but that seems to be cleared up now.
My thoughts are:
6 Black Skirt Tetras (existing)
6 Platies
3 Dwarf Gouramies
4 Angelfish
3 Oto's
Is this combination/number going to overcrowd my tank? Does anyone see any immediate problems with compatibility?

Re: overstocked???

I would say 2 angels instead of 4 and 1 gouramie rather than 3.

The gouramies are territorial surface dwellers. They setup territories on the surface area, and will protect it vigorously. Having three in a tank that size would probably lead to over aggression, which would stress the rest of the fish. Other than that it sounds like itd be an awesome tank.

Re: overstocked???

I agree with CWC and would like to add not to add the Otos until the tank is a little older as they are a little sensitive to water conditions.
Adding the additional fish a few (or species) at a time will limit the ammonia spike that will result from adding fish.

Re: overstocked???

keep an eye on the angelfish pair if you get 2. when they buddy up or mate, they have been known to wipe out the rest of the tank population. if you went with a pair of angels, i'd recommend other fish of the same size or i'd go with a single angelfish. is this a tall tank? angels love talls but can be happy in most any tank.
