live plants will help with water quality, however, bamboo isn't a true aquatic plant. you can put the roots in water, but not the entire plant or it will eventually begin to rot and pollute the water
there's a variety of plants you could use. i'm not really sure what kind of "look" you're going for, but i'm sure that if you browse www.plantgeek.net, you'll get some good ideas usually there's also people on there looking to sell stuff, or you could just get names/images and go to the petstore and pick out what you like
Hi Genie, I actually have a betta in a 2.5 right now. I'm cycling a larger tank for him, but I still have him in there with some of the plants I'm going to use, and he completely loves them! I put in some green hedge and a sword. The sword came in pretty bad shape, so I'm not sure if it will make it, but the hedge is pefect for him, he swims through it, lays in it... I think your betta will love just about any plant you add, and unlike some other fish, they won't really bother the plants!
Hi Jenie
Not sure if you got live plants yet. But I have frill plant in with my betta. its a nice bright green and very soft. It can make a nice bed for the betta near the top of the tank. Or you can use mondo grass. I have that also, and it is very nice and small and doesnt take up alot of room.
On the hornwort... I can tell you from my experiance with it in the 29g tank, that it sheds like crazy and makes a horrible mess. When i took it out of the tank to replace it with more frill plant that doesnt shed, it ended up shedding like last years xmas tree and was an awful mess to clean up! ugghh..
I can show you some footage of the betta tank with the frill plant and mondo grass if you would like.
hmm-- the frill looks alot like my hornwort, except the bottom is different. I like the mondo grass. I have found however that this tank is hard to keep plants in because of the light.

Yes the frill plant does look like the hornwort, but the hornwort has more of a reddish tone to it and bigger needles. The frill plant IMO is a more dainty plant. I have natural sunlight when its shining and use the light when its not. I will let you know how it works out as far as the amount of sunlight/light it needs.
thanks!! I had hornwort, but it got stuck in the mouth of one of my cories and it looked really painful. He worked it out in a day or so. I was afraid to touch him b/c I didn't want to make it worse.
