hey all
have introduced plants to the tank today please dont ask what they are the lfs BOY didnt know either but assured me they would be fine and in fairness he had them in his tanks and they seemed to be doing ok anyway was wondering how much substrate is enough to bury the root , just enough to cover or what?

You don't have to bury much of the roots. Some plants though don't like parts of them to be buried, so you need to know what plants you got. Plantgeeks is a great site to get started on taking care of them, and identifying what plants you have in your tank. Here's a link to a great article to get you started on the site:

they are java fern2 anubias gigante1 and cryptocoryne spiralis 3 says on the site they are easy to maintain and keep so hopefully will be ok

Java Ferns and Anubias do not need to have their roots buried in gravel. They should be tied to aquarium decor (with a black cotton thread for example). Cryptocorynes may appear to be dying in the beginning, but they should be able to grow their leaves back. Although they may not do so well under standard lighting. Their roots are usually buried under gravel.
