Does java moss grab on rocks by itself?

Hello,

I have turned my fish tank into a moss tank for shrimps and guppies.

The question I have is if moss will grab on the rock that it is placed on. Currently I have them tied with red thread and the red makes it look really artificial. I was wondering if sometime later I can take the threads ouit and the moss will still stay on the rock.

The moss and that I have is java moss and I have weeping moss coming soon.

Thanks

usually it needs something more porous to grab onto like driftwood or such...but you can use clear fishing line and see if you can get it to attach after time

Welcome to FishLore!

I was going to suggest the fishing line too.

I've used it to tie java moss to driftwood and you can't see it at all once the moss starts to grow over it. I had an algae outbreak recently and ended up pulling the java moss off the driftwood. The moss had really grown into the wood. I've never had it tied to rocks. Maybe something porous like lava rock would work. In both a 10 and 20 gallon I have put a clump of java moss behind the intake on the HOB filter and it looks good when it spreads out.

Good luck with your shrimp! Hope to see some pics.

Java Moss will slowly attach itself to anything with cracks & crevices all over it. Things like smooth river stones are no good as there is no porous surfaces for the plants to get a foothold in. Lava works very very well with moss. Better than anything else IMO. Wood is also very good & even rough rocks with some cracks can work. I really like the stocking idea mentioned above, I might have to try it myself & see how it goes.

Attachment will take some time & I wouldn't bee worried about the thread too much. In a few weeks the moss will have grown over it & you won't know it was ever there. Cotton thread will also rot away over time so you won't actually have to cut it off. I don't know if the cotton being dyed will be good to let rot in the aquarium though. I use undyed white cotton or fine fishing line for doing my plant attaching.

Thank you for all your suggestions. Im getting really lots of help from the forum, thank you!

One thing I want to know a little more about is attaching moss on coconut shells. I saw it somewhere while surfing the web, but cannot locate any detailed information. So,, does coconut shell work just like driftwoods? or would they decay over time? I want to try using coconut shells since they are easily available at supermarkets and driftwoods or rocks arent. Also, one other reason is that I've never tried fresh coconut in my life. lol

So what are bads and goods about attaching moss on coconut shell?

You can make caves from coconuts. You have to remove the white meat from the inside and then boil them to remove the tannins as you would driftwood. You can leave the hairs on if you wish. As far as putting java on top...I remember reading about it somewhere as well but I cant remember where!
I would imagine you would do it the same way as driftwood.
