First experiment with plants

My 20g aquarium is fairly new, with mostly fake decor.

However, I bought some small, inexpensive plants from petsmart. I bought an amazon sword (which turned out to actually be 3 small plants) and an anubias nana. None of the plants looked that great, many yellow leaves and some decay. I trimmed anything that looked beyond hope, and planted them in my gavel substrate just to see how things went. I also bought a bottle of API Leaf Zyme plant food. One of the amazon sword shoots began to wilt an turn clear so I took it out ad threw it away. The other two still have fairly yellow leaves, but now also have some fresh green shoots coming up from their base. The anubias looks very green. Any basic plant maintenance tips to share? IS the leaf zyme a good product?

Congrats on trying some live plants. Once they start growing well you will never want any fake plants again. Your swords would love some root tabs in the substrate near their roots. You were right to trim off the dead leaves. They won't repair the dead leaves and once they are gone the plant can put its energy into growing new ones.
