thing is, i've never tried live plants before though, so i don't even know where to start, what to choose or even how to plant them. i have play sand for substrate with nothing else... no flourite or anything. and my lighting is just ordinary, whatever came with the tank.
help! thanks. |
How many watts is your light bulb?? And how many bulbs can you fit in the hood(s)?
I'd recommend Amazon Sword plants. Since you have a 50 gallon tank, you can get a 40W light bulb 6,500k or 40W 10,000k. Some people get lights that are like 25 - 40W that have about 18,000k or 20,000k. Just to let you know, plants need strong lights. Especially Amazon Swords need fairly strong light. Although 40W for a 50 gallon aquarium is considered (low light) which means that if you get Amazon Swords, they will still flourish. Just won't grow as fast unless you have Flourish or any other type of Plant Fertilizer.
Also, Anacharis plants will be a great plant for people to start with too

I wouldn't recommend getting Cabombas if you were thinking of that. They will get messy since they require a lot of pruning once in a while.
Also, you might want to watch out. Cichlids love eating plants. Since you have Firemouth Cichlids.
