New Plants

I just went to petsmart today and got some new plants. I am happy with two of them, but very disappointed with the other. I researched what I brought home and found out I bought 1 Red African Hygro (Nesaea pedicellata), 1 Purple Cabomba (Cabomba pulcherrima), and 1 Brazilian Sword (Spathiphyllum tasson). I found out that the Brazilian Sword is actually just a peace lily and that it should rot away in my aquarium. Will it? Multiple Websites say it will, but liveaquaria says that it should grow. I have 4" of air exposed in the top of the tank for my ulvaceus plant to flower, and some water hyacinth to grow. If it grows into this area will it survive partially submerged? I really like the plant. If it won't grow I can put it in an open topped 50/50 stream aquarium or a regular flower pot, but would really rather keep it in the main tank.

I use this site for plants - and of course they say it won't survive submerged. I had some luck with mine by keeping it in its' original pot and placing the rim at the level of gravel - then i would just remove dead roots. Personaly i would try it and keep a close eye - if leaves start to fade or yellow or start to turn translucent, or new leaves look unhealthy or the roots start rotting i would take out and place around the house. That is what i had to do for mine eventually.

Some people won't touch pet smart or any non LFS plants because of mislabeling or snails, etc. For what it is worth, since even most LFS's and pet shops get their plants from common suppliers - it usually falls to the suppliers to label and they get theirs from aqautic nurseries - who ship in truck loads. Since even most LFS's don't have people who have plant knowledge or just the basics - it is hit or miss. I created for myself - a aqautic plant guide which of course you can always buy on the net - and i took it with me to my LFS's when i went shopping for plants - especially uncommon ones.

You are right, the Brazilian Sword is not a truly aquatic plant.
This is the site I used when I got started with live plants. http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide.php
It is a great website. It gives you different ways to search, as well as loads of information and pictures. It also give advice on placement of the plant in the tank.

Here is what the plantgeek site says about your plants:

I took it out today as the spathes (flowers) were falling out. It looks very nice in a pot on my plant stand next to a bird's nest fern. I really like the variegated leaves on it. As for snails from petsmart I just leave them for the clown loaches, or put them in my stream tank. The bluntnosed minnows just love snail eggs. As I just found out the red plant is actually an Alternanthera reineckii . It makes it all the better though.
