need good plants

i just ahve a few question about plants.

i have been trying to change my tank into a very heavily planted tank but most of the plants i've tried die so quickly. i have tried plants like baby tears (got ripped apart), aluminum plant (either rotted or my BN plecos ate it), hair grass (got ripped apart or died), banana lilies (still have, but are still small) and java moss (still have, but hasn't grown much, got it bout 2 months ago).

i also tried the variegated rush, i still have and it looks great. is there any other really good plants, as in really good i mean they last ages, cheap, dense, looks good, fish don't eat or rip them etc.

what are some good looking reed like pants?

i have been suggested java fern, why is this a good plant?

i also heard that a plant called grassy is good, does this last for a while?

i also have seen onion bulbs, do these last for a while?

and finally, what are some good floating plants? is duck weed good? does it last a while and does it grow?

thanks

The aluminum plant died because it is not an aquatic plant. (Though often sold as one)
The grass and baby tears died because they require high light and a nutrient rich substrate to do well. Any low growing plant that is grassy in appearance will require high light. You have about 1 watt per gallon. You should stick to lower light plants.
Might want to try wisteria, swords, valisneria, cabomba, anubias, or Java fern.
Careful adding floating plants unless they are the only ones you have as they will also block light from plants below them.

thanks, i will have a look at those plants soon. i don't have a light because the tank is near the window, i know a real aquarium light is way better, but i don't have the money right now. it isn't in front of the window, but on the wall next the window.

eg. 1_ (not a very good diagram, sorry) the tank is the 1 and the underscore is the window.

and one more thing, does any one know the common name for Vallisneria Gigantea? i have tried checking on the internet, but still couldn't find any common names.

thanks
