red sea co2 system

I am looking for a co2 unit that is inexpensive and hassle free. My LFS recommended this unit for $50. http://www.redseafish.com/Prod229.asp
They also said that with this system I won’t have to worry about pH drop. Is this true? If anyone is using this system I would appreciate some feed back. Thank you.

This is cheaper...

However, if you are planning to run this on your 55 gallon, I wouldn't bother. The Hagen CO2 system did little to help me when I had my 55 planted running, and I ran 2 of the units.

Really my lfs tell me that this is a reliable system and that is hassle free, they also say that it will work on my system.
I read somewhere that I could make this for around $5. I am intimidated buy adding co2 to my aquarium.

Don't be intimidated. Just don't expect miracles from the DIY route (you'll replace the mixture VERY often from what I understand) or the cheap packaged deals... for a 55 gallon tank, given you have the lighting to necessitate the CO2, pressurized is a better, albeit much more expensive, choice.

You could always just do what I do and keep low light plants! LOL!

Pressurized is MUCH better for a 55. What kind of plants is this for and what kind of lighting? It may not even be needed if you have 2 watts per gallon or less and low-mid light plants...forget it. You dont have to have Co2 to have a nice tank...that said, if you want to take it to the next level and grow plants that aren't possible under regular conditions then pressurized is the way to go at that tank size. Remember the triangle though...
More light= more ferts=more Co2
They all work hand in hand in terms of plant demand. Co2 isn't the magic answer for great plants its just one of the conditions that needs to be there.
Throw one out of whack and watch the Algae go to town!

I have attached a link below so you can get some background on what I am having trouble with. Any comments would be appreciated.
Can I get higher watt bulbs with out replacing the fixture it self?

I agree with Harpua that you cannot upgrade the bulb past 28 Watts as that is what the ballast is designed to run. With just over one watt per gallon your money will be better spent on lighting than Co2.
If you are experienced with wiring or know someone who is there are some good retrofit kitsw out there or you can build a hood and put in your own ballast.
This is a good place to get a DIY kit. The reflectors are top knotch for the money.

I would recommend the 2x55 kit as it wont be too much lighting without adding Co2. $69.99 plus being creative on building your own hood. They also have DIY enclosure instructions as well.
