Plants Galore!

So I spent nearly $60 on plants today. I am finally planting my South American tank and have just got my Asian tank cycled, so lots of plants from stores in three cities!

I researched everything before I bought them with one exception.

I found this one cute little fern looking plant at Petsmart of all places. The tag says Bomeo Fern T javanic.

It literally looks like a fern you would see hanging on someones front porch, except it is very dark almost a purply-brownish green and small and has textured leaves instead of smooth.

I decided to just go ahead and get the little guy and find out if he fit into one of my biotopes later.

Now I cant find any info on it!

As soon as I get him planted in the SA tank for now I'll will post a picture.

So any help would be greatly appreciated!

The fern you got could be nonaquatic. Happens often at Petsmart.

Yes, the Borneo fern is not aquatic. Do you know what else you got?

I agree with Beth...most plants sold by Petsmart are non-aquatic but are sold anyway. I didn't want to be the one to say it haha. That plant will look great for 1 week to 1 month and then the leaves will start to decay. Should you choose to put it in your quarium anyway I would remove that plant as soon as it starts to rot.

Thanks guys!

That was fast. I will plant the little guy and a pot with soil and he will live happily by my window in the kitchen.

All my other plants were not impulse buys. I had researched on aquariumplants.com and other sites to make sure everything was a true aquatic and either Asian or South American (for my biotopes).

A list of what I bought:

Pennywort
3 types of Swords
Corkscrew Vals
Wisteria
2 Crypt Wendtii

Should be plenty of light for the list of plants you posted. Good luck with them.

So I feel the need to rant and you guys are my victims!

I planted the aquatic plants in both tanks. The 15 gallon tall is the Asian Biotope and everything went smoothly except it needs just a little more gravel (I took the black pebble mixed with eco-complete from the 28 gallon). The tank cleared right back up and the 9 Female Bettas are incredibly happy to be out of the Tetra tank.

My rant is about the South American 28 gallon. The filter is a Marineland Penguin and only about a month and half old (I was running the original filter up until a week ago also). Eco-complete is very sandy and silty, I love this for my Cory Cats and the look is great and the plants love it. However, my filter? Not so much. The silt/grit keeps getting into the turbine (?) thing that makes the filter work and it squawks something terrible! I have taken it apart and flushed it with clean dechlorinated water 5 times now. It had been working great until just a second ago while I was writing this!!!!

I do have a sponge filter in the tank that I use for my quarantine tank, but it is by no means good enough to handle the 28 gallon alone for any length of time. If the silt stuff would just settle already I would be happy.

So that is my rant, plants look good but are coated with silt particles. I will be posting pictures tonight while I'm at work. Hopefully it will clear up by then, if not you guys can see a cloudy looking tank and a clear gravel lite tank!

Thank you for letting me rant.

Try making a prefilter out of a media bag or a sponge. That always worked for me with Eco.

A pre filter, like harpua2002 suggested should do the trick.
Another thing to try is raising the intake tube to about 6" above the substrate.

I've impulse bought that fern before, too.
It looked so pretty and said right on the label "True Aquatic plant"

Does anyone know the native land of Moneywort? I found Pan Tropic on plantgeek and the Americas on Aquariumplants.com.

I might just go ahead and add it to my SA tank, even though I don't have a conclusive answer...

Pictures!

Both tanks have newly purchased plants that I haven't planted yet. The SA tank has to bunches of Moneywort and the Asian tank has 2 bunches of Corkscrew Val. Petsmart actually let me exchange the fern for these bunches!

I'm guessing it means the "tropical" part of Panama. Wouldn't that be lower N.America and upper S.America?
Close enough!

According to my"Aquarium Plants" by Christel Kasselmann Moneywort(Bacopa monnieri) is widely distributed within the tropics and subtropic regions of Africa, Asia, australia and America. Occasionally found in Europe. Hope that helps
