depending on your light output in a ten gallon that would be the biggest decision maker i think. Get your plants after you've laid your gravel or substrate in the tank, before any fish or anything else that will live in the tank. planting them will make the water all cloudy.
i have a ten gallon, planted tank that you can look at in my profile, in my albums section. i have the 2 ten gallons side-by-side (a 10 gal
betta tank, and a 10 gal shrimp tank) & i put a 4 ft. long, double-bulb flouroscent light fixture across the top of the both of them, so they each get ALOT of light for their small tank size (each bulb being 40 watts= 80 watts/ 20 gallons= about 4
WPG [watts per gallon]).
my 10 gals are planted with jungle val, pennywort, water wisteria, & another floating plant i'm not sure of yet... all doing great, and the shrimps and betta love it!
