Lighting

I need an 18" bulb that will let me grow plants in my 36 gal hex.
I'm a bit confused, just want some recommendations on specific products please!

Are you going for low to med light level plants or high light level (with CO2)?

If the former, and you are using a single bulb the link below is a good one:

Another option is this next one but the K rating is higher and you may need to think about CO2 addition:

If you don't want to go with pressurized CO2 yet (it is kind of expensive), but would like to add CO2 to the tank, you can use Flourish Excel; unless your game for the messy DIY method using yeast

Hope this has been some help,

The bulb should be chosen based on the fixture, so first things first, check your lighting fixture and see if it says anywhere what wattage it is designed to produce, then choose a bulb that matches. Chances are that either of the bulbs ≈ D ≈ linked to will fit, but it would be good to know for sure.

Now that said, hex tanks are often harder to light correctly for plant growth than their rectangular counterparts of a similar volume, since they are typically deeper, so you may end up needing to consider upgrading more than just the bulb. How tall/deep is this tank?

Please don't shy away from a bulb because you're afraid that an arbitrary number like a color temperature rating would somehow increase CO2 demand. If there is any correlation between color temperature and CO2 demand, which I doubt, it would be so small as to be inconsequential.
