Plants do require iron to grow, but they have other needs (light, carbon, other nutrients) as well. Unless you're meeting all their needs, I have a feeling that just adding iron and nothing else won't have a huge impact on growth.

Chelated iron is iron that was chemically bonded to a compound (generally an amino acid) to make it easier to absorb. SkepticalAquarist has a pretty good explanation
