| Moneywort.. should I bother? I am an idiot when it comes to plants. And for some reason, the moment I walk into a store I forget everything I read online about particular plants.
So here's the thing. I have this 10 gallon tank with naught but a single 15w fluorescent bulb. I have standard aquarium gravel in there, maybe an inch deep. I initially walked into the store intending to look at anacharis and anubias... but I walked out with moneywort.
Plants are an enigma to me. And I almost always kill them. But I feel a desperate internal need to have SOMETHING green growing in there that isn't algae... because of an uncomfortable level of nitrates in my tap water. Now, the nitrates I detox with Amquel+ with my water changes; but because I was told by Kordon (makers of Amquel) that their product merely detoxes but does not remove the nitrates, thus making it still available to plants, my assumption was that as a result the "detoxed" nitrates would also still be available for any algae wanted to show its face in my tank. Thus, I feel the need to have some plants.
On the other side of the coin, having just gone through a mini cycle I am afraid of causing another with any unhealthy and dying plant material. So my question is; given my current setup, should I even bother putting the moneywort in my tank? And if so, what do you do with it? Put the cut ends of the stems in the gravel? Of course, I asked all these questions of the petsmart employees but I believe almost nothing they tell me. I also googled moneywort, and found some sites (plantgeek was one of them); but I'm afraid to do anything without asking here. |
