hey hey yes as others have stated you are looking at 3wpg, assuming you have 2 30w floresant tubes and they are not incandesant bulbs then you would actually have very low WPG. And yes the member who pointed out that c02 is pretty much needed at that level of light has good points (I would use less light if there was no c02 in the tank). Also other fast going plants (pretty much any stem plant will do) would be needed to soak nutrients from the tank or algae can take off real fast. If you don't want to mess with c02 in either pressurized or DIY, I would stagger you lighting if you can, IE run one bulb for like 3 hours both for 3 and back to one for last 2 to 3 hours of lighting. As you really don't want to run your lights for more then 8 to 10 hours or you are giving algae a bigger window then it needs.

Ferts really only become a big issue if your dealing with high light and c02 as your plants will consume nutrients and ammonia and nitrites etc at a staggering speed under those conditions. With slower growing plants like what you have in anubias and java fern they will take nutrients quite slow, so your fish will pretty much provide them with almost everything they need. And they and will do better with lower light levels if your not doing c02.

As far as root tabs and fertile soils go, any plant like yours and java mosses etc, have no need what so ever for root tabs or fertile soil, it would be a waste of money, as they are water coloum feeders and take there nutrients from the water not the soil. When you start getting into swords and crypts etc that is a very different story, they are heavy root feeders and get the bulk of there nutrients from the ground they are in. I have crypts in my tank that have massive clumps or roots that extend about 3 feet from the plant when I look up to the bottom side of my tank from inside the stand.

Oh and as for your question to me, I am in Squamish BC about 45 min north of Vancouver and about 45 min south of Whistler.

I JUST got my Java Moss in the mail yesterday. I got mine from eBay because my LFS' are just useless for the most part. A fist size wad came wrapped in wet paper towels, in a ziplok baggie. I didn't have a nice rock to attach it to so I just put a little gravel on it (until I've got a nice rock to attach it to) to keep it from being sucked into the intake of the HOB. IMMEDIATELY upon putting it into my Tetra 1.5 Gallon tank my two Ghost Shrimp started climbing all over it. They absolutely love it!!!

Early next month or hopefully later this month I'll be getting a Coralife 2 x 9W 6700K mini light hood for that 1.5 gallon. I know it's overkill with light but I'll probably use just one of the lights instead of both. With the addition of Eco-Complete substrate and a DIY co2 system and Miniature Hair Grass I'm hoping for a green cube of lush life.

Here's another thread but it shows my Java Moss. It's wrapped around lava rock... heh, Java on Lava. Anyway, I got a six pound bag of lava rock from WalMart for like $4. Lava rock is pretty near inert and extremely porous so you don't have to worry about lava rock altering the chemistry of your water and the moss'll have something to grow into rapidly. I'm hoping that it'll grow onto/into the terracotta flower pots as well. I can't wait to put in the Eco Complete. I'm sticking with the single 10watt CFL I'm using now for at least a couple months. The moss is lush and growing, the light's bright enough for viewing... no need to change.

Here's the latest pic of my micro aquarium. The dwarf hair grass was just put in a couple days ago and showed up nearly dead... it's starting to come back, I think. But check out that Java Moss!!!!! LUSH!!! The little light green spots are all new growth! I cannot stress just how much of a difference this moss makes in the life of your water critters.
