Are there any plants that can thrive without a nutrient substrate and have nutrient-rich tablets instead?

Java Fern.
It doesn't even grow in the substrate, it is attached to rocks & wood.

well yeah but is there anything besides java ferns, java moss, and anabuis? :S

It is supposed to be attached to rocks & wood. It roots the best there. The roots may rot in the sunstrate, so keep an eye on that.
