What type of plants for a newbie?

Hi, I am a complete newbie fish keeper and i am setting up a freshwater 10g tank for a betta ( maybe in a divided tank or a community tank).

I am buying some fluorescent bulbs for my canopy which will have a total wattage of 20 or 30 watts and some gravel from the LFS.

I would love to get some live plants but I think they may be too hard to keep? What type of plants can I put in this tank ( if I can put any in)? How do I look after them ( do i need any special supplements?) and do I just bury them in the gravel?

I've been reading the links and guides but I'd love some some specific yes/no or do/don't do this advice as I am easily confused!!! ( I think I have read too much, lol!)

Thanks so much in advance,
Kath

there are a couple of good plants that don't require much effort at all. Some you might find the easiest are Aponogeton undulatus, anacharis, and java moss. These don't require a whole lot of attention, special light, etc. Check out Plant Geek for a lot more info.

Yes, java moss or java fern grows easily in low lights with no special treatment and the Betta love the java moss. You may like to try either those in your tank if you can find them locally in your LFS.
If you go with artificial its nice to use the silk plants IMO they are gentler on the Betta fins than some sharp plastic. They also like Amazon Sword plants to lay in when they are sleeping near the surface. They make them in silk and looks almost real in the tank. I have those and my bettas like to sleep on the wide leaves.
