Why did my hornworth die?

Ok... I had gotten hornwort for my betta tank like a month ago. Everything was fine, in fact, it was getting pretty invasive. I had to tie it up and re arrange it several times a week to have open room so Balthier could swim.

A couple of weeks ago it started to become yellow and sort of rotten. Then, it started shedding the little needles, (which are a major pain to clean) and it is now about to die.... What happened?

Are those metal weights bad for the plant? I never had a problem with them before...

My java fern is doing great by the way....

What kind of lighting were you using? How many W? Any fertilizer/what kind?

I take out off the metal weights (they're usually lead) and just stick one end of the hornwort into the gravel to keep it there.

My hornwort isn't doing so hot either, and it's at 2WPG. I think it may be that it needs CO2 at that level... Not sure though.

I got hornwort for my tank when I first set it up and had exactly the same problem. For the first little while it seemed fine, and then it started shedding it's needles everywhere. like you said, a MAJOR pain to clear up!

I asked the girl at Petsmart about it, and she said ideally, it's more suited to like outdoor ponds than an aquarium, because in Aquariums it just doesn't seem to do well at all. If you want something like Hornwort, I'd be more inclined to go with Cabomba. I have that in my tank now and couldn't be happier. It plants easily without the use of the lead weights, and it doesn't need too much to thrive.

Oh gosh, on sunday I was forced to take Balthier out of the tank and try to clean the mess... I had to replace 100% 0f the water to be able to take the needles out, because the pump would just get clogged... gosh my poor fish was so scared, and the plant is still dying!

Does camomba require a lot of light?
