Cause of Death???

I added two small bunches of Java Fern Lace (low light) two weeks ago. I broke up most of the first bunch and threaded it into a couple different holes in the driftwood I have. I have noticed that a few of the bunches are showing black tips on the leaves. Today I noticed that one of the leaves has gone completely yellow. Anyone have any idea as to why my plants are dying? Nutrients? pH (7.8)? Light? CO2?

Hi Cub Fan,

Tell us about the conditions of your aquarium so we can have an understanding of your situation and assist u to find out what has caused your Java Fern to black & yellow.

1) Size
2) brackish ?
3) What sort of lights? How many?
4) What sort of plant fertilizer do u use if any? How much did you add?
5) Do u use Co2? How much?
6) What fishes do you have in there?
7) What other plants do u have in there?

Duh! That might help!

I have a 38G with a basic 20W bulb that I leave on for 10 hours a day. No CO2 or ferts. My understanding is that this plant is low tech. No other plants.

7.8 ph
5 dH

I have 6 Prestella Tetras and 2 Columbian Tetras.

You should i deally have around 1.5 W/gal. You've only got about .5. I'd definitley say that's your problem. If you could get a 40w+ bulb, then it will be much better.

I had a 20w on my 35g and the only way to get a higher wattage lamp, was completely change the light fixture.

I am still researching a little more on the light fixture change. Has anyone see a T8 40 watt bulb or higher? It sounds like 04 maybe right.

My LFS did suggested add some of Seachem's Flourish into the tank. It appears that the fern is growing very slowly. Thanks for the input.
