Snails
Hello,
I have a 10g tank with live plants, no fish. I have a major snail problem in the tank. I guess they came in on the plants. There are tons of little snails everywhere.
How do I get rid of the snails and save the plants?
Thanks,
Heidi

What do you mean by 'save the plants'? The snails that come on plants don't eat them. Getting rid of snails could be tricky. You can try putting some veggies in there, the snails will go straight to them!

I meant when I said "save the plants" is if there is something on the market that works to get rid of the snails, since there is no fish in the tank.
I have tried the veggies and wafers, but it doesn't really work.
I heard, that if I take the plants out and put them in bleach 1 to 10 solution. Does this work? I would really like to save the plants, anything else in the tank can go.
This tank was the home of my favorite fish that just passed away.

Well, chemicals aren't good for your tank at all. Perhaps you could buy some Clown loaches for your tank, wait a month, then return them so they don't get to big on you. That would work.
What kind of plants where they?

What kind of snails are they? I have Malaysian trumpet snails in most of my tanks they don't bother the plants at all. Common pond snails and ram horn snails don't bother the plants either but my fish seem to be able to eat them so I only have a few. The only plants my snails bother is the ones with dead or dieing leaves other wise they clean algae off them. Depending on the type of snail you have you can keep the snail population under control with a dwarf puffer (one of the few true freshwater puffers I have found). I see you had a betta in your tank before if he was anything like mine he ate snail eggs and small snails. Since you have live plants look for a plant food with iron in it I noticed when gave one of my tanks to much iron the snail population died down I am not for sure if it had anything to do with it or not but it won't hurt your plants either.

Acctually, if this is going to be a Betta tank, in evey tank I've ever kept a Betta in, the snails where all gone! In fact, once I added a betta to a snailinfested tank, and within a week they where all gone! This was a female Betta.

I'm currently having the same problem with snails in my 2, 10 ga divided Betta Boy Tanks I have also tried the lettuce and cucumber and it didn't do anything I even tried removing the live plants and replacing them with fake Still got snails!!! I squish them when I see them and I am doing more frequent wc's and feeding less Any suggestion on this topic would be greatly appreciated!!

The snails in my tank are ( I think) Ram Horn snails and a few pond snails. Taking a look at my other tanks, they have the snails also. I even have clown loaches in my 60g.
Thanks for everyone's help!

I was just going to post about this too. I bought some plants from ebay that arrived Friday. I used Potassium Permangenate (sp?) to do a soak. Well, I couldn't find the PP so ended up getting the clear water by jungle and used that. I added enough to the water so that it was a magenta color. I let the plants soak for 20 minutes, rinsed in tap water then put them into dechlorinated water. I was looking at the plants today and found three tiny snails crawling up the sides of the container they're in. Fortunately, I hadn't put them into the tanks yet. My main reason for doing the soak was to kill any worms that might be in the plants. This was a replacement batch of plants because the original were in bad shape and had little red worms in them. Now I'm wondering, if the soak didn't kill the snails, did it take care of the worms? And, aside from using bleach, what can I do to get rid of the snails?
