Second, I have crypt wendtii plants which I heard do not like light changes. Is going from my 40 watt florescent going to kill them... any way I can soften the blow? Should I not do this?

Tank currently has hornwort (growing up but very thin), java fern (not growing or dieing), java moss (only one dieing), some mystery grass plant (isnt growing or dieing), and the crypts (growing). Want to get some others though and with a 65 gallon tank thats 2 foot tall I need better lighting. And I think my congo would look beautiful under it

I would definitely upgrade the lighting! I just went from 15 watts to 60 watts on my 20 gallon, and my plants, including a bunch of crypts, are just loving it.

You have way less than 1 watt per gallon and not much will grow or even survive with that.
