Spider plant in tank?

Not sure if this would be better here or in the Aquarium Stocking area...

Just curious about using a spider plant (chlorophytum comosum) inside an aquarium. They seem to grow fine under water, but I don't know if they would be bad for tropical fish.

Also curious as to other plants that may do well in a tank.

I've tried to get some java moss to graft onto a piece of driftwood, but the shops always say that they're out.

The Spider plant is one of many plants that will (probably - all terrestrials need different conditions!) do better on your desk than in your tank. They can adjust to aquatic life for a few months or so, but just rot after that. Unfortunately, once they've been in the tank for a while, they can't be 'rescued'. My recommendation is to buy terrestrial plants for terrestrial environments in the future!

With Java moss, you tie it down to the wood. Grafting is when you cut a stem from one plant and put a piece of another plant to make the plant on top do better. It's common to do this with cacti - indeed one of the plants in my cactus collection is grafted! I am such a perfectionist today.

As an experiment I tied a pothos on a piece of driftwood sticking out of the a tank. It took root and grew. All the leaves were out of the water. I am waiting for my spider plant to get a shoot so I can try that but in a tank without fish until I know the thing won't start dieing back and rotting.
