Looking for a plant.

I am looking for a plant that I can tie down to a multi tiered rock shelf. The flat sectioned tiers are rough slate. The LFS only had 1 java fern available, and one of the employees claims there isn't any plant that will grow on a shelf besides the java fern.

My goal is to tie down a plant on both tiers to provide a little more of safe zone for my top dwelling tetras. The Tetras seem to migrate to the corner where the shelf is at night, but hover a few inches above the cliffs.

Any ideas on what I can get besides a Java fern?

African fern (Bolbitis heudelotti) can be tired to rocks or driftwood but it does get tall. Anubia is another one you can tie on to rocks and driftwood. There are several different types of anubia.

Anubias, Ferns (particularly Java Fern), and Mosses (particularly Java Moss) can all be tied to any aquarium decor - both to artificial ornaments as well as to natural ornaments such as driftwood and rocks. All of these plants are also low-light and non-demanding .
