I have a couple of plants now and they're not doing as well as I had hoped. My tank is 20 gallons and has a 15w compact fluorescent bulb. From what I've read I should probably upgrade to about 2w per gallon. Can I just buy and bulb that is 40 watts that fits in the hood or do I need a special bulb?

you should look a t the hood and see what the max rating is. Then install what ever dosent go over the max rating. On another note what is the plant your trying to grow?
