anchor live plants

Hi,

I try to anchor live plants into the gravel but they keep floating up.
My tank height is high and its difficult for me to reach to the bottom of the gravel.
The tongs they sell at Aquarium shops are expensive.

What can I use to anchor the plants without hurting them?

Also, I want to leave Tropical Hornwart floating on the surface of the tank.
But they float all over the place and its makes the aquarium untidy.
I hope to keep them on the surface but at a specific place without them "flying" all over.

I was thinking of tying them up in a bunch and then tie them to the top bit of my aquarium.

Will this kill the plant? Any suggestions?

Thank You.

How deep is your gravel? You can use Plant Anchors sold in LFS and then try planting them. Regarding Hornwort, if you have lot of water movement in you tank, it is hard to put them in one place. Tying them might not work as it will rot where it is tied.

Hi miker,

Gravel is 3" deep.
I tried planting them in the gravel but they die. Probably because of low light. Therefore I let it float but its just so untidy. I need to keep it at 1 place if possible. Still thinking of a solution.

Thank you.

With the help of Plant Anchors, plant them when you are doing the water changes as less water = less chance they will float. Take off 1/3rd of water, plant them and slowly fill the water again. You can also use some extra gravel/stones to weigh down the most troublesome plants. Once it starts to grow, remove the stones. Good luck.

Hi,

miker thanks for all your help.

I have attached plants to pebble with a plastic cable tie and buried them in gravel while the tank was half full (just did water change).

With the plants I want to float on the surface at a specific place, I have used 2 pieces of driftwood and created a corner (L shape) on the surface by tying them to the top of my tank using longer plastic cable tie.

The plants stay floating within that area without "flying" all over even with the strong water movement.

Thanks Fishlore!
