Tropical Hornwart

Hi,

I have some Tropical Hornwort.
I had separated them and planted them into the gravel.
First few weeks they were doing well.
But now they have become weak unlike when I first got them.
Their color has become dull.
A few of them had come out of the gravel and floating around.
I have lost quite a few of them.

In the same tank I have Water Wisteria, they seem to be growing quite well.
I have seen some new shoots and their color is still very bright green.
They look healthy.

My question is how can 1 plant do so badly and another do so well?
What am I doing wrong with the Tropical Hornwort?

Thanks.

Hornwort needs a good bit of light to grow well planted, may do a bit better floating. I use a standard 4' shop light with 2 plant bulbs, and the floating hornwort grows quite well. Even when overrun with duckweed...

Hi,

I left the hornwort floating. I recently purchased some hornwort that are brownish-red in color. I noticed that the green ones are surviving but the brownish-red ones are doing quite poorly.

Is there a reason?

Thanks.

I had so much hornwort in my goldfish tank, I move some to my plant nursery where I keep the pH, GH, and KH much lower and the temperature much higher in case I need it as a sick tank for my SE Asian blackwater tropicals. The hornwort is not doing very well in there at all but, as you've experienced zeebo, my water wisteria does very well in the plant nursery. So well, in fact, I use it to cultivate more water wisteria for my goldfish's "salad bar." My hornwort is all floating.

So go figure. Here are my numbers:

Goldfish tank (uneaten hornwort thrives):

ph 7.6
temp 74F
KH about 300 ppm
GH about 75, as I recall
yeast CO2 injection (12.7 ppm calculated)
4.5 watts / gallon about 8 hours / day

Nursery / sick tank (hornwort dies or suffers):
pH 6.4
temp 80F
KH 40 ppm
GH 25 ppm
yeast CO2 injection (26.3 ppm calculated)
4.5 watts / gallon about 10-12 hours / day
