Java Moss Info needed.
I want to finally incorporate some live plants into my 10 gallon tank, and I really like the looks for java moss. I know that the light requirements are low and that it is relatively easy to take care of. my questios are, how big does it get? what kind of fish don't work well with it? (I plan on having a betta and 3-4 cories in this tank) are the cories going to eat the plant? if I do get this, as I have hear they need to be "attached to wood or rock, how would I go about doing this? Thanks In Advance.

i have tons of java moss. this stuff could pretty much live in bleach, it needs barely any light. idk how big it can get, mines about 5 times as big as it was when i bought it, i think it just keeps growing. no fish will have problems with it. the cories might eat thinks growing on it, but not the actual plant, so dont worry about that. (i would go with 3 cories at the most for 10 gallons). i never attached mine, and just let it do it by itself. if u wanna attach it, you can tie a rubber band around the piece of rock/wood u want it on. if u want it in the substate, just use ur finger and poke it into the gravel in a couple places, just enough so it stays in place. it will soon attach itself.
overall, its a great plant and this fish love to hide in it if they are scared.
hope this helps!

thanks! the reason behind me asking about attaching is i may want to attach the moss to a rock that sort of jabs out like a mountain so it would look pretty cool. but, seeing how you said it gets big, I may just let it grow. It DOES grow up as well as out right?
Also, is java moss hard to find?

Yeah, talking about Java Moss, I recently got some attached to wood already from a shop. The wood was COVERED with moss at the shop, but when I got home and started shaking it in water gently to clean out debris, it seemed as if half the moss just... shredded. Now there's moss left, but I come home daily and see strands of moss littering the gravel, as if it's shedding. Is this normal? Does moss shed? There still are some light green tips of new growth, but there's also a lot of brownish green strands that worries me.

Sometimes when changing tanks the Java Moss will turn brown and break off but if your seeing fresh green tips it will grow back and just keep on growing. Sustained high temps will also make it turn brown also.

If I take mine up into the 80's and leave it it tends to get a little brown.

OK, check out my tank pics. I have an insane amount of Java. Some is growing from the driftwood, both by being tied and poked into holes. The java on the bottom is just growing unattached, and the female betta love to swin in and around the stuff.

The java in the amazon tank his about 2 months old, the java in the asian tank is about a month old. I really think given the right tank conditions, you can get the stuff to stick to anything.
Oh, and if you want to see really HAPPY java, check this pic out:

I hope so >_< I seriously sometimes think that I'm just not patient enough for plants. I've noticed that even on the places where the moss shredded off, there still is new growth so I know I shouldn't be too worried - it just happens to be the most bloody expensive plant in my tank is all -_-.
I've seen my corys nibbling it, though. They couldn't be the ones ripping it off, could they?
On the plus side, my other plants are pearling ^^ It's just the **** moss lol.

guys, my tank averages 80 degrees, and mine is doing fine. What kind of lights do you have, and what is your pH, gH ande kH? My water is VERY soft, pH about 6.5 with a gH 0-1 and kH 5-7. My lights are about 4 wpg. Under these conditions it's doing great. But I also got my hands on some good java to begin with. How was yours when you bought it, was it nice and dark emerald green , or was it already turning brown?

I just bought some java moss for my guppy tank hoping it will protect my fry if i get any. I thought that it would float at the top of the tank but it doesnt. It still will give some cover though i guess.
