| ill take pics on my good camera in a little so you can see better, if tha helps.
also, i was wondering if the big stem with wat looks like baby plants growing on it can be cut and replanted, to form more plants
also, ive looked everywhere for 18'' flouressent bulbs over 15 watts everywhere, and havent found any. some 15watt bulbs say they are better for plants, even though the wattage is the same. can someone please explain this?
i have 2 bulbs over my 55 gallon, one on each half. (18 inch at 15 watts each). this makes my WPG 55 over 15,right?
or 55 over 30, because of the 2 lights.
thanks Last edited by lilsoccakid; February 11th, 2008 at 08:24 PM.

| When the baby plants have several leaves and roots it can be cut from the parent plant and planted.

| I think 18 inch lights only come in 15 watts. You have 15 watts over the 55G

| thanks for clearing that up! also, i just clipped a preety big baby plant off of the parent plant and put it into the soil (sand) and added a little extra plant food.
do u think this 15 watt will be able to supprt my plants ok? my swords hav been doing very well in the tank for a couple weeks. |

| Plants like Swords need around 2 watts per gallon of light. That amount of light will grow just about anything, but your 30 watts will only be able to grow Java fern, anubias and maybe Cabomba.
Those are the only plants that stay alive in my large tank, which also has less than 1 wpg like yours. |

| The more watts per gallon the greater variety of plants you can have. I just ran into the same problem myself. I was speaking to a very knowledgeable aquatic plant guy at a local store and he explained that in order to increase wattage you have to buy a new hood set-up. I thought you could just switch out one light with a higher wattage light, but if your hood is like mine (check out pic under my name--the hood/light came as part of an aquarium kit) the plastic part of it is only designed to carry the wattage of the light that came with it. He said that you've got to buy a glass hood and then you can switch out different watt light fixtures. He also talked about spectrum of light and how that can affect plant growth. I'm still a fish newbie so I don't know much myself but I hope some of this is helpful for you. |

| oh, a few more things.... Java fern, water sprite, and wysteria all can grow well under lower light levels. I have 15 watts over a 20 gallon and have just added some java moss, water sprite and wysteria. I have some argentine sword plants that need iron supplements once a week. I also have a cabomba but I'm returning it because when I bought it I didn't realize how much light they need and I don't want it to die in my tank. |

| I have the same setup as you, and my cabomba has been doing quite well for over 3 months now! |

| how is this setup? i think the luner lights are cool, and its a good deal http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...8&pcatid=11418
would this be good for a HEAVY planted aquarium? its 130 watts, so thats roughly 2.4 WPG.
also, my LFS wont take returns on plants, so is their anything i can do to make this last till about march 20th? (my bday when i get the lights). right now im adding a little extra plant supplement, and they are floating less then an inch from the surface to get more lighting |
