It's green what is it

I recently learned that you are not supposed to plant Java Ferns in gravel, rather just rubber band or tie them to some drift wood or a rock and they will root themselves to it. So I experimented with this. I tied two young Java plants to two different rocks, and after 4 weeks the roots developed some green algae like thing that completely enveloped the roots. What is this?

But there is no algae in the whole tank. Algae cannot just decide to grow on this plant's exposed roots

I shove mine down into the gravel just far enough to keep it from floating. The roots are pulled up slightly, and they've grabbed onto pieces of gravel by themselves. They have a brown fuzzy look but that's the roots, not algae. I like them because I do NOT have a green thumb, but they're covered with babies!
