Plants that require VERY low light

I have a 55 gal with a 40watt light. Is there any plant at all that is easy to grow and would live in those sort of conditions? I dont care if it is floating or planted (I have a coarse sand substrate but you can plant in pots right?) or it is anchored on driftwood or rocks ( I have both in my tank). Is there anyway possible I can have some sort of live plant? Thanks.

Java Ferns and most mosses will do fine in those conditions, albeit grow slowly. I had luck keeping Crypt Wendtii alive as well. The anubus didn't do so well though...

If you google on your computer low light aquarium plants there is a good site that has a list of low light plants. I printed out the list and took it with me to the fish store. I knew exactly what plants to get. A lot of the store clerks don't know much about the plants.

My 55gal when i first planted it, had a single 40watt tube, the plants grew, slowly, but were healthy

I had crypts, narrow chain swords, anubis, java fern, java moss & hairgrass.

Most will recommend crypts, anubis, java ferns and java moss as low light plants

Thanks! I think that I will try some Java moss (from the sounds of it you cant kill it which is good ) some hair grass and some water sprite floating on top. Does that sound like they would live? if so which should I add first? and where does one get good plants? my LFS has great fish stock but not that great of plants are they as expensive as fish to order online?

Angelfish - Please be careful with Java Moss. They spread like crazy and also get stuck in filter uptake tube.

Water Sprite can be floated or planted. Can you guys believe, I got it from Walmart and it is doing well!!

I think that i will put the java moss in a 'moss lawn' and one of the main reasons is I can take it out of water to cut it so it cant go everywhere in the tank.

Yes, Java Moss is an excellent low-light plant. It can live happily with almost no light. Extremely hardy too.

Java Fern is good also, but Java Moss is a little easier to keep.

Good luck!

Whatever you plant make sure to use a fertilizer. I have the same setup as you and my plants are doing fine using Leaf Zone. I have swords, hornwhort, onion plants, and Aponogetons.
