Thinning plants???

I have a few plants in two different aquariums. The first is a 100 gallon with 2 live plants, and the second is a 20 gallon with another 2 live plants. 3 out these four plants only have leaves at the top. They had leaves from top to bottom when I bought them, but when I put them in the tanks they lost all of the leaves at the bottom. But one of the plants stayed full and is still looking very healthy. What is causing this? A lighting issue?

Probably -- the upper leaves may be shading the lower ones.

What type(s) of plants are they? Some aquarium plants are actually grown out of the water, and grow terrestrial leaves, which fall off when the plant is submerged. They're eventually replaced with the leaves we're used to seeing.

I have no idea what type of plants they are. I have tried to research it to find out, but the plants all look so similar that I can hardly tell many of them apart.

tony - there are many things that can cause what you are experiencing. You really need to know what type of plant it is to figure the problem out. Maybe you can post a picture of it here, as I have similar problems to you with regard to plant identification.
