I must be doing somthing right

I will soon be overrun with Java Fern Plantlets. Looks like about 15 to 18 one one of the plants, just under a dozen on the other. Not bad for coarse gravel, no CO2 and less than 1 wpg! I'm so happy to have an aquarium plant live more than a few weeks, let alone start a family!

Nice one! I've done the same with my java ferns in similar conditions - [ic below. I just plant the plantlets in the substrate with some of their roots sticking out, and they seem to grow very well. They must be using up loads of nitrates, and the larger plants are still producing more. I love java fern!

If you get over run by them and want to sell some, let me know how much you'd take for a couple plantlets. I'll give them a try in my current setup until I can get my new Satellite fixture and versa-top.

Will do. Though I'm kinda regretting getting the Java moss right now, the stuff is like dog hair, everywhere you don't want it to be.

Yep, never heard it described so well, but in certain situations I love it

Well, things are moving along quite well finally. I don't know exactly what I did that made the difference after all this time, but all the plants are doing well. Especially the two Wendtii.

Both of these guys are doing great. Keep in mind I brought the back one home only in Oct. and the front one in Nov. They were both rather spindly and small when I got them. And both were uprooted and moved only three weeks ago. No sign of Crypt melt. For a size reference, the ghost shrimp in the lower left corner is about an inch long.

In fact they're both putting off little babies. All three of these I didn't replant until they were fully separated from the parent and free floating.

Hi Magpie Tear,
Your tank looks great! Im so happy to see plants that can grow in low light and do good. I will have to try some wendtii and the java fern in my tank now that I see it can do good without the additives and high light!

Supposed I ought to update that as well. I mentioned it in other threads, but not this one. It all runs together anymore.
Since the original post I changed the lighting from the 48w stock florescent to a 130w CF unit. So I'm at approx. 2.3 watts per gallon. Still not "high level" but a good bit better than what I used to have.

It is great that you can have great plants without expensive equipment. I am trying to start a planted tank and I was going to have java moss but I might get willow or something else because I dont want it to overrun the tank. Does anyone know if you can grow plants with the florescent curly bulbs that work in incandesect sockets? I think that I will try to add more wattage to my tank via makeshift hood useing those lights.
