Do these plants need substrate?

Do Vals, cryts, or Willow Leaf hygro need substrate?

Thanks

Yep.

I assume you mean crypts?

The hygro is the one of the three that might do without substrate, but all would do better with substrate.

They all need a substrate, preferably a nutrient-rich one. Or, you can have plain gravel filled with plant root tabs. Is that what you meant by the "supplement"? Another thing you can do is fill the tank with nutrient-rich substrate only in places where the rooting plants will be.

Plus, I'd say, it would be good to have at least 1.5 wpg of lighting for these plants.
