Medication and plants

I have a cory cat with pop eye...I noticed a couple of days ago he had a sore on his face, but now it has turned into pop eye. It hasn't seemed to have gotten better with frequent water changes, so I was going to medicate. Would I be ok to medicate the whole tank, or do I need to get a hospital tank and medicate there?

I'm mostly worried about killing the plants, as I'm pretty sure I read something about meds being bad for the plants.

BTW, I was planning on using Maracyn Two.

Going to post this in fish meds, also.

Well, I also have heard that medicating a tank with plants is not a good idea. Firstly, the medications may contain chemicals that can be damaging to plants, and secondly, after medicating a tank you'll need to use activated carbon in your filter to adsorb all the medication from the water. Activated carbon is also not good for plants as it removes all nutrients from the water.

If you have a Q tank, definitely treat your fish there, unless you're not that concerned about plants. You may want to ask the same question on Plant Geek too. Read the medication's label and see if it talks about affecting aquarium plants in any way. If there is no info on that, I'd say the safest way is to assume it does damage plants.

I don't have a q tank, unfortunately. I do, however, have $10 and a way to get to walmart I also have a filter, heater and light I could use temporarily on that tank. I suppose I'll have to take a trip in a little while to pick those things up, as even though I don't really agree with antibiotics(not even when using on people), but the daily water changes are really taking a toll on me now, as I have to calibrate my tap to the right temp, and carry one or two five gallon buckets filled at the tap into the next room, typically spilling a bit, then gently add it to the tank without disturbing plants...you know the drill. And not only that, but his condition is only plateaued, not getting any better.

I think he must have busted his nose on something...what, I don't know. But he has a slight wound on the same side of his nose as the eye that is affected. I guess I could also get some stress coat.

Anyway, maybe we should discuss this further in the disease forum, since I've decided not to treat the main tank.

I think it's OK if this thread stays here, don't worry

I am really sorry your fish is sick, and I do hope it recovers fast. I do know that keeping your water super clean will help your fish heal fast. My baby Cherry Barb seems to be recovering at the "speed of light" in the Q tank (with 0 nitrate), lol No medications, just frequent water changes and a temp. of 80F. And it's healing by itself. (Plus, keeping her net very clean.) I'm a firm believer in those water changes, especially now
