Suggestions for Getting Plants

When I get my 46 gallon after I've let it go and gather some nutrients in the substrate, I'm going to want all live plants. However, I've never had any experience with live plants before and I wanted to get some help from you professionals!

FIRST QUESTION: Where do you recommend getting live plants? Where do you get yours? In a store or online? I looked at the selection at my PetSmart and there's about five different kinds, it's pathetic.

SECOND QUESTION: What kind should I get? I want a very natural looking tank for my future 46 gallon bowfront tropical community. The gravel will most likely be dark, probably black or a shade of brown. There's such a wide variety and it's hard choosing.

THIRD QUESTION: What special materials would I need to buy for plants? I want them to thrive (not too much!) and be very healthy. Since I've had no experience with plants before there's high likelihood I'll kill them!

Thanks for helping me plan ahead.

I get my plants at my LFS. PetSmart's plants typically look like poo, unless they just got their shipment in.

As for what plants to get, and what equipment you'll need, you're going to have to decide what type of plants you want...low, medium or high light plants. There is a thread stickied at the top of this forum called "General Guide To Low-Light Planted Tanks". Its chock full of good information for low light plants, and a small insight to higher requirement plants as well. Also, go to plantgeek.net They have a HUGE database of aquatic plants, and it can be sorted according to plant type, placement, light requirement, difficulty, family, genus, region or category...any how, its an awesome place.

All in all, do some further research into the basics of plants, and decide how much time and money you're willing to invest, then you can probably get some more straight forward answers out of people.

P.S. you won't regret going planted

Neverendingninja is right. You should definitely take your time to read the guide to the low-light planted tank first. You should refer to Plant Geek as well. If you still have questions after reading the guide, feel free to ask The guide is a good starting point.
