I bought a small java fern today, it has the roots wrapped in kind of a foam and then this is wrapped with a lead weight. when I unwrap it, almost each leaf has its own roots and breaks all apart. I rewrapped it, and am wondering can I just drop it into the tank like that for awhile, or attach the whole thing to a decor ( don't have wood yet).

Stay wrapped or Unwrapped with weight? that is the question. ( This is my fist attemt at a live plant...)

If you mean wrapped in the foam, I would unwrap the foam and leave it on the weights and just drop it in, you can move it around or lay it in/on/under a piece of wood later to grow into.

Frequently leaving the foam/rock wool on the plants can cause an algae outbreak from the fertilizer that has been used on the plant to make it grow.
