are plants

benificial in anyway for fish to have them in their tank? And do having plants cause ammonia levels to increase?

The plants use up some of the nitrates and just help with the natural look to the tank. The fish also eat off of the plants when they are hungry and don't have any food.

i'd say that plants would cause the ammonia levels to decrease. unless they're rotting. that's a different story

live plants are a much better alternative to fake plants they will keep nitrate levels down and take care of fish waste and look much better than fake plants unless they are not health - healthy plants=healthy aquarium

Calculate what wattage of light watts per gallon (WPG) you have in your aquarium then you can decide which plants are suitable as there are plants that require low, medium and high light in order to survive note CO2 is sometimes required

A few good low light <1wpg plants are Anubias, Java Fern, Java Moss and Hornwart most of which can just be tied to objects such as driftwood
