My plants are dying..

lol I know nothing about aquarium plants.

I have a bunch of plants I bought from petco in tubes. For the most part, the plants stays okay except there is usually always 1 leaf on every plant that is dying at a time.

Do dying plants affect water chemistry?

I treat the water with Seachem Flourish. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2004+113221

Is there anything else I could be doing to keep them looking nice??

Re: My plants are dying..

Hmm, I have looked at the Petco tubed plants and nearly all of them were not true underwater plants. So, it might not be your fault in any way- they might just not like being underwater.

Re: My plants are dying..

I move to school this week.... and while I have to (almost) empty the tank, I was thinking of tossing the plants that aren't doing well.

Can anyone send me a link to some good plants to order online??

Re: My plants are dying..

Good online link is liveaquaria.com. The only downside is that you've got to pay for rush shipping, and there is a minimum order amount.
A better (though more limited) option, in my opinion, is to order from Dino. If you search for a thread of Dino's titled "Available" you'll find a couple of good plants for really really cheap.
You can also head to Plantgeek.net and look up plants that have the lighting/placement requirements that you want and then go to Petsmart/Petco/LFS and try to find plants that way. I've bought a few things like that.
Also, if you go to Plantgeek, you might be able to identify your plants, and see whether or not they are truly aquatic. You can also post pics here, and we can try and help you out.

Yes, rotting plants do affect your water chemistry. They add phosphates as well as ammonia to the water. It's best to trim leaves that look like they're about to go. If a whole plant looks bad, but you're sure it's an aquatic plant, you can cut it off right above the root ball (if it has one. Some plants, like anacharis, don't really root). I've done this with water wysteria and anubias, and both look beautiful now.

Its just normal, really. Nothing major to worry about. Even in the fishhouse Dino and I have java fern that seems to always be dying, but never seems to look any smaller. (Fast growth rate with fertilizer, I suppose)

Java Fern dying, is that possible hehe, but yes I have had it grow slow in low light low fert tanks. But its basically the cockroach of aquarium plants (even if you thing its all dead, it bounces back and spreads).

But Amnagrla, do you know what any of the plants are, or have photos, and what kind of leave death are your talking about, plain rot, algae covered death, yelllowing on old or new leaves etc? And yes I have seen many stores that carry plants that are not true aquatic plants, some have decent stores at times too.
