You don't have to have live plants in your tank. Some tanks can't have plants, because the fish are so destructive to them. Depending on your light situation, I'd go with something easy like anubias or java ferns to start. Here's a great article to give you some ideas:

Live plants are good addition to your tank because they provide oxygen for ur fish and hiding places. They also add a touch of beauty

As Gunnie said, you don't "have" to have live plants if you don't want to, or if your fish are the kinds that will eat or destroy live plants. If you have relatively harmless fish, having plants won't hurt you either. Plants are very good in a tank since they help filter the water too, plus they make a tank look very nice And as Pinky said, they also provide hiding spots as well as they oxygenate the water.

Even a few live plants help. I have about a 60/40 mix in my 10 gal tank of artificial to live plants, and unless you look close, you can't really tell which is which. The fish are just as happy hiding in the artificial ones, and the couple of live ones help cut down the nitrates (mine never go much above 15-20ppm, and that's usually when its time for a partial water change). I also have a bunch of hornwart in there, which helps keep the algae down too.

I'll have to get some pics of my tank one of these days and post them.
