Even a few live plants help. I have about a 60/40 mix in my 10 gal tank of artificial to live plants, and unless you look close, you can't really tell which is which. The fish are just as happy hiding in the artificial ones, and the couple of live ones help cut down the nitrates (mine never go much above 15-20ppm, and that's usually when its time for a partial
water change). I also have a bunch of hornwart in there, which helps keep the algae down too.
