| Java moss Hi guys
Any advice on how to keep my java moss going? Only put it in yesterday. It's kindof floating. I was thinking: does it like still water or more agitated water? Does it like receiving oxygen directly from my bubbler or should I move it (it's currently right above it). I was thinking of sticking it on top of a tall ornament I have, kind of like between the ornament and the top of the water. Any thoughts? |

| Re: Java moss It likes low light, can be floating or initially tied down to something until it attaches. I don't know about the still or agitated water, maybe check out plantgeek.net I would think it should not be over your bubbler simply because plants need a mix of co2 and oxygen depending on day or night. Most planted tanks don't have bubblers in them or at least not during the day but i would leave the bubbler in, just not under the moss. You can tie the moss onto your ornament with some string or rubberbands and cut or take them off once it has attached. Butterfly has more expierence with java moss, I'm still trying to locate some, it's been about 1.5years now and I can't find any |

| Re: Java moss Thanks, ATM. Right, I've stuck it back on the tall ornament and away from the bubble thingie. Also checked plantgeek.com but was not very successful at navigating through there. I did find a link via plantgeek.com that confirms what you're saying about bright lights. I can't change the settings on my lights, so I guess it'll have to do. Really, you can't find it? Maybe we were lucky. The guy didn't seem to make a big deal out of it (for once!). Normally, when we ask for somethign they haven't heard of, they act all defensive and mocking. Grrrr! Fish stores! |

| Re: Java moss Java moss needs to be tied to something or it will float and attach to stuff all over your tank. I have raised it in low lights as well as high. It's almost impossible to kill it. bet your baby otos would love it.

| Re: Java moss Thanks, Carol.
Good to know that the lighting doesn't matter that much, although what ATM machine was saying is documented on other sites, so thanks, ATM. It'll be one of these things.
Actually, it's stuck between the top of a tall ornament and the surface of the water. Doesn't seem to be moving. If I had to tie it, what would I do that with? I heard fishing wire may not be all that safe.
It's for my betta. I am leaving loads of room on top for him to breathe, don't worry. |

Don't think it's true but no stores carry it by me. My friend said he was getting some in soon and he could give it too me after it's established in his discus tank he's setting up now. |

| Re: Java moss A lot of people use cotton thread and by the time the moss is attached the thread has rotted and fell apart. I have used rubber bands, thread rocks pushed together, just about anything works. with the fishing line you have to go back and cut it and take t out.

Carol | That could be it, only thing is that it could live in sewers and clog them up. |

| Re: Java moss I can see why some plants and animals (snails) are banned from sale, due to irresponsible disposal by people, or the invasive nature of the items.
Hopefully all here on fishlore are wise and careful when they are ready to tear down their tanks. As for java moss, I would also love to get some, and as far as I know it isn't banned here. But because it is in such short supply, I have never seen it for sale.

| Re: Java moss mine didnt like it at first, but when i turn the light off at night they get scared and seperate, they like the moss because its really close to the wall so they can be secure in between the plant and the wall. |
