another noob question

set up my tank on sat and started just adding food, but then i decided to switch to the ammonia method today got home and added the ammonia today but i added too much when i test it now its 8.0 what is the best way to continue?

just leave it be without adding more ammonia for now...it will drop on its own....once it goes below 4ppm's and you still have no nitrites, then add it back up to the 4ppm level

have not added any since i added that much and it dropped to 4 yesterday but now looks to have spiked back up to 8 is this normal?

What type of test kit are you using? That wouldn't be normal to see it drop so fast without seeing any nitrites as well. The tank hasn't been set up long enough to have dropped so fast. It could climb up if some of the food you put in was still rotting in there but I am more interested in the drop. As I said it just hasn't been long enough yet to show that big of a drop unless you are using seeded material from anopther tank. Possible that the test was inaccurate?

oh yeah forgot about the food i had been adding it once a day starting on 7-3 but stopped on 7-7 on the 7th is when i added too much ammonia its the API ammonia kit it may be me not reading the color correctly i did also use a 6-1 strip from jungle to check other stuff nitrate and nitrite were 0 of course i am a bad judge of color will post reading when my gf brings her api master kit over and i test it with that

Usually when you see any decrease in ammonia the result is Nitrites. Then when you see no increase in Nitrites the result would be an increase in Nitrates.
