Help with cycling

My tank, a 20 Long, has been cycling for 31 days.
I had my water checked last night and here are the results

nitrate: 40
nitrite: 0
pH: 9.0
ammonia:3.0
GH: 30
CH: 240

What should I do from here? and how much longer till it will be safe to add fish?

Your tank will be ready to add fish slowly when you have ammonia 0 nitrIte 0 and NitrAtes less then 20. How are you cycling the tank? It can take 6 weeks or longer.

Hi Crimsonbull...you are a ways away from being done but you are on track!!

If you can, id recommend getting your own test kit so you never have to rely on anyone telling you where your tank stands....an API liquid master test kit is aweome as it has all you need to test with and you can get 100's of tests out of it...

although some dont think snails are fish per say, you deffinately need to be doing daily water changes with some prime if you can find it, because with those readings as the ammonia is so high, it is going to kill the snails......are the snails alive?

I agree with alaskagirl that it is going to take a few weeks to cycle the tank....goodluck with everything!

What is the pH reading out of your tap water?

Below is a great link about pH.
