I shouldn't have checked...

Ok. Maybe I should add this onto my other post about needing to work on my timing. Anyway I moved my Red-tail shark over to the ten gal and so far he is more active and happier then he was in his old tank (no surpirse). I moved him over on Aug 10 and have been doing religious water changes and babying him immensely. Today I finally gave into temptation and did a test.
Now I know the begining of a cycle is supposed to be nutz, and that you shouldn't test in the frist week b/c the results will drive you up the wall. But I was curious to see how everything was going.
I only checked for amonnia and Nitrites b/c they're the ones that I'm worried about. Usually I check pH after ammonia b/c you need both to read the chart to tell you were your tank sits either in good or bad zone.
the results:

NH4 = 0
N02 = off the charts.

The N02 I expected b/c I hadn't done a water change yet but is the ammonia for real? I thought it was supposed to peak before Nitrites. Now I haven't tested before this so it could have happened but... in four days? Is this just a strange mis-test or what?

No, just put in all the old gravel and the decorations.

okies so cycleing with fish and none of the above, you must do daily water changes until the tank is cycled..if you use prime for a water conditioner, it will lock down the ammonia for 24 hours until the next water change...the only time you dont bother testing is either fishless, or when you add one of the two above as those will send the readings off the chart and freak you out!

That's what I'm doing I was just wondering if no ammonia 5 days in was worth worrying about or not.

since you added some decor and gravel from the other tank you probably brought enough bacteria with it to keep the ammonia spike low enough thats its already gone would be my guess

I agree with Clinton, when I cycled with stuff from my established tank, I never had sings of ammonia.

Ok thanks everybody that's kind of what I was thinking but I wasn't sure. How long do you think it will take for the NO2 to drop do you think?
