Ammonia
Hey guys. I'd like to know where you guys got your pure ammonia. I was reading the sticky about cycling with it. I found some at Publix, but it's not the right kind. Thanks!!

I got mine at my local grocery store...it's a mom & pop operation though.
I've read here on the forum that people found it at walmart or ace hardware.
lol Little Cherry Barb answered at the same time as I did.

I looked at Wal-Mart....I couldn't find it. Where would it be...like what section?

The one I found at Wal-Mart was in the cleaning supply section (in the grocery isles section), but it had a surfactant and bubbled when I shook it.

Josh: You can find it at any hardware store, even a supermarket, at the cleaning section.
What you need is Ammonia solution without additives or surfactants. Just shake the bottle (glass or plastic) and if it forms bubbles as drinking water does, it's safe, otherwise -either bubbles remain or some film is formed at the surface, discard and check another one. Shouldn't be a problem and it's really cheap.
With a 750ml bottle, generic brand, I cycled 5 tanks (10gal, 5.5gal. 29gal, 145gal, and 40gal) and still has something left.
Pure ammonia is a very dangerous chemical, and is sold with permit, usually for lab use. Any brand will do, it is usually diluted to a 3%. That's what you need.

Ok, that would explain why the pharmacist at Wal-Mart looked at me funny when I asked if they had any pure ammonia. Good grief ! I'm going to Ace hardware today. I've read that's where other people have found it. Hopefully I have some luck!

Great luck today!! I found the janitorial ammonia that everyone has been talking about. Sine people have used it, what did you find as far as the number of drops per gallon using this stuff? I have a 30 gallon. I know it depends on the size of the droplets going in, but even a ballpark estimate would be helpful. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure I added enough to bring the reading up to 5, but I don't remember how many drops, sorry.
It was only a 5g and it was seeded with filter media from my established 10g.
This link might help you.

For my 12 gallon tank, it was about 25 drops to get it up to 4. When I cycled I added too much (40 drops) and that brought my reading very high. Around 30 got me to 5.
With the ACE brand janitor ammonia, and an eye dropper that I bought at Publix. I don't know if that was much help, but thought I'd say it anyways.

Ok....I'll give that a try. Is four high enough...or do we want it a little bit higher?

Id say do not add ammonia above 2ppm. When there is too much of one thing the cycle slows down.

I added alot of ammonia during my cycle (7.0-8.0+) which was bad (and I'm still cycling...), but in the thread Lucy posted, it advises to originally bring it up to 5 or 6, than when it goes to 0, raise it to 3-4.
